With Diwali, Christmas, and New Year on the horizon firework season is upon us. For most of us humans this is a time of celebration and joy, but for our furbabies, it can be quite the opposite.

Most dogs and cats hate fireworks

Professional firework displays can be really stressful and frightening for animals, so we would never recommend taking your pet with you. Even calm dogs can be spooked and become disoriented by the noise, lights, and crowds.

At home, the noises outside can be unsettling. Remember that your pet's hearing is a LOT better than yours, even if the noise doesn’t sound loud to you, it definitely will to your pet.

Signs your pet is in distress

-       shaking

-       vocalizing (barking or howling)

-       excessive drolling

-       running to a hiding place

How to protect your pet

It can be difficult to avoid the noise of fireworks altogether this season, but there are some things that you can do to protect your pet.

Tiring your pet out before the fireworks start will make them calmer and less likely to engage in anxious of disruptive behaviour – try a big walk just before the celebrations begin.

Turn on the TV or radio to distract them from the loud bangs. It’s also a good idea to close the curtains to help with soundproofing.

Distracting your pet with toys is another good idea.
